TLDR; Solution

Creating the Ultimate Fan Viewing Experience. 

We wanted to break the physical limitations of being in the stadium by adding an enhanced version of the in-home video experience to sitting in your seat. We created a multi-camera experience allowing fans in-stadium to watch five concurrent camera angles, in-sync, with replays and data overlays of Next Generation Stats from the NFL, NBA.

Approach

My process is a combination of Lean UX and Design Thinking. This approach is an ongoing iteration-dependent process that is built upon measurable goals along with research as the main focus.

Shareholder Workshop

We set up a workshop with stakeholders to define the goals along with business and user objectives. Through the workshop we were able to gain a thorough understanding of user needs and possible case scenarios for user experience.

Here we fleshed out the iteration outline and established a roadmap according to the ongoing business and performance analysis.

Core Need:

Develop fan engagement experiences with robust immersive and interactive features made possible by the speed, low latency, and bandwidth of 5G technology.

Goals:

Create app which allows in-venue users to view live action with no lag.
Generate income from sponsors and in-app betting. 

User Persona 

Having gathered data and defined goals, we built user personas in order to further envision our target audience as well as their motivations and needs. The user personas added a lot of value as they guide us in thinking who the solutions are designed for and helped greatly in the brainstorming stage, where the functionalities were discussed.

Ideation

I started doing rapid sketch iterations, using data from the research stage and came up with several potential solutions. Using feedback from other stakeholders such as field engineers, data analyst, I did some initial validations on the sketches and was able to narrow down the ideas.

Wireframe 

We designed low-fidelity wireframes to give the client an idea of our plan and to get feedback on the site map. The next step was to create high-fidelity wireframes along with describing the functionality of each section which would help us in the prototyping stage. Moreover, the developers would get familiar with the features and functions.

Mockups

Once we made several changes to the navigation, camera angle and optimized the information architecture of the overall app, I was able to produce low and high-fidelity mockups using the wireframes elements. These were used to create prototypes that were utilized to perform iterative rounds of quantitative and qualitative user testing.

Outcome

The 5G Bar is set.

We saw 61% increased in-venue user retention and increased engagement rate. Verizon is planning on upgrading stadiums and arenas across the United States to 5G Ultra Wideband within the next year. Verizon also got contracts with to design and offer Multi-view experience for NHL, NFL home teams.   

Verizon, capitalizing on fans’ shifting viewing patterns, is leading the way with this latest innovation featuring:
– Up to 7 camera angles
– Low latency and in-sync videos
– Live replays
– Augmented Reality overlays and social media sharing.

Process

Stake holder Interviews –

I was solely responsible for User experience and user Interface Design and led all the design process, conducting various rounds of qualitative and quantitative research and creating sketches, wireframes, mockups, and prototypes, while collaborating closely with the developers to ensure the quality of implementation.

Continue to deliver quality digital experiences across the NFL, NBA, NHL, F1, and Utah.
